Plans for 2009

The leadership group had our annual planning meeting at the end of October. We are currently planning 4 meetings and 4 CEOs for 2009. Once the dates and locations are confirmed I will add them to the Dates to Remember section.

Starting with the February newsletter, all newsletters will now be posted online in addition to being mailed. If you would prefer to download it yourself and not receive a copy in the mail, let us know.

One announcement: The newsletter that was mailed had the incorrect date for the January CEO at PeiWei. It is actually Tuesday January 27th, not the 21st. The version posted here on the blog has the correct date.

We will be meeting Tuesday, January 27th at PeiWei (pronounced "pay-way") at New Market Square, 21st street and Maize Rd. We will meet at 6:30. If you would like to join us, please call in your reservation to Gayle Cloud at (316) 788-2531.

Thanks!

OK. We've been trying to find a way to post the newsletters online...

This is our first test of a possible solution. Below is the link to the newsletter being sent out this month.

Key Lime Pie from Outback Steakhouse!

Outback Steakhouse has a Key Lime Pie. The normal crust is not gluten-free but Barb C. talked to a manager and provided them with a Gluten-Free Pecan Crust recipe. If you call at least 2 days in advance and talk to a manager, they are willing to make a pie with a gluten free crust so that you can order a slice of pie for desert.

I tried this and it is very good! Just remember to ask for a manager (Shawn, John, or Justin are the names I think). Also stress that it is the gluten free crust and make sure you talk with the manager when you go in for your meal/desert. A slice of pie is around $4.50 but it is a large slice.

I actually ordered whole pies. They charged me $30 plus tax per pie (and gave it to me in pieces), but it was worth it!

This is the Outback Steakhouse at 21st and Rock. The phone # is (316)634-6500.

Thanks Barb for thinking to ask about providing a GF Crust recipe!

Food for Thought Gluten Free day

Got this email from Food for Thought...Thought I would pass it along.

Hello!

I though I would pass on this event to your group:

Food for Thought will be hosting its monthly gluten free day on Saturday, July 28th from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. We have found a wonderful new supplier of gluten-free products and will be sampling many of these great new products and lines. New items include: ready to eat frozen products, the top gluten-free line from Europe (Schar), baking mixes, ready to eat cake & pies and much more. This event is a fabulous chance for individuals to sample gluten free products and hopefully find new favorites.

Hope you can make it and see how good gluten free can be!
Regards,

Melinda Foley

Gluten-Free products at Central and Rock Dillons

I was at the Central and Rock Dillons this weekend and I was happy to find several things I've been looking for.

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oats
Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets
Glutino Crackers (the round ones)

I knew this Dillons had a nice variety of GF stuff but I was very happy to find these 3 things.

Anyway, thought I would let everyone know.

Food for Thought Guest Lecturer

The chapter received an email from Food for Thought and they asked that we spread the word. So here is what we received:

Food for Thought Inc. will be hosting nationally-recognized author Karen DeFelice on Thursday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. DeFelice will be speaking on enzymes for autism and other neurological conditions. During this presentation DeFelice will discuss the basics of enzyme therapy, the digestive process, various special diets (including gluten-free), nutrition and how it all works together. I am not certain this would be of interest to your entire group, but those with food or gluten-sensitivities (as opposed to CS) would definitely benefit. We would appreciate if you could share information about the upcoming lecture with interested individuals.

Individuals wishing to attend the lecture should sign up in advance. For more information or to register for this free event, please contact:
Food for Thought 2929 E Central or 683-6078

Finally, we try to host a gluten-free day one Saturday each month in order for our customers to have a chance to taste some of the gluten-free foods offered. We know taste is important, so we hope this give individuals a chance to try something without the commitment. Our event this month is February 23rd.

From the February Newsletter

Annual Potluck Dinner
Our first meeting of 2008 is our potluck dinner. It will be held Saturday, March 8, at 1pm. The location is the East Evangelical Free Church at 14725 East Harry. Please bring one or two covered dishes and your own table service. Drinks will be provided. Please provide a recipe for each item. This is important for our members with other food allergies and also, if possible, we like to include the recipes from our meetings in the next newsletter.

Nancy Marrs from Homemade Gourmet will be talking to us about her company's gluten-free mixes and how they can be used to make home-cooked meals easier and faster to prepare.

Directions to the church: The church is located near 143rd St East and Harry. From Kellogg and K-96, go east about 1/3 mile to 143rd St, turn right(south) and go one mile to Harry. Turn left (east) on Harry and the church will be another 1/3 mile. It is on the south side of the road. Enter the church at the double doors on the east side of the church.

Renewal Time
It's time to pay dues for 2008. Our new year begins in January. If you want to continue to receive the newsletter and information about our meetings please bring $12 with you to the next meeting or contact Bev Eades for her address to mail it in, you can find Bev's email address under the contact info.

CEO's (Celiacs Eating Out)
We are planning three dinners out this year. Our first dinner is a pizza party at Bernie's Pizza at 2342 S. Maize Rd on Saturday April 19, 2008 at 2pm. No need to bring your own crusts, we will provide Nature's Hilights crusts at a cost of $3 each. Bernie has a way with a gluten-free crust and his pizzas are always marvelous. Please call Marty Weeks at 684-4017 with your reservation.

Mentors
The group feels it would be beneficial to develop a mentoring program to help those with celiac who have questions or need help with the diet between our scheduled meetings. If you would like to be a mentor or if you would like to have a mentor that you could contact with questions or concerns call Marty Weeks at 684-4017 or email her at martyweeks@cox.net

Prepared Gluten-Free Meals
This item didn't make it into the newsletter so I thought I would post it instead. I have a friend who cooks for me once a month and then puts everything in individual containers. Kinda like homemade tv dinners, all gluten-free. I generally decide on the menu and then she does the cooking.

My friend's name is Nancy and she is willing to cook for others, or at least sit down and figure out if it would work for you. The price would probably depend on how often and how long she cooks. You would supply the groceries (unless otherwise arranged) and she would most likely cook at your house to prevent cross-contamination, but since she currently only cooks for me, she is open to other arrangements. Whether you live by yourself and hate to cook (like me) or you have a family and don't have time to cook, this could be a good alternative to Simple Supers or Dream Dinners and other things like that were you may not have much to chose from. If you are interested give Nancy a call at 440-3934 and tell her you got her name from Staci.

She is not a celiac but she has been cooking for me since August and I have not had any problems. I just make sure I have groceries that are gluten-free and tell her what I want and what I want in it and she goes from there. Again, if you are interested give Nancy a call at 440-3934 and tell her you got her name from Staci.

Thanks!

Opportunity to submit comments on Digestive Disease Research

Copied from an email I received from the National CSA:

The public is invited to make comments on Draft of Opportunities and Challenges in Digestive Diseases Research: Recommendations of the National Commission on Digestive Diseases

The Commission was chartered in July 2005 by Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and formed through public nominations. The Commission’s mission was to conduct an overview of the state-of-the-science in the field and to develop a digestive diseases research plan consistent with the research mission of NIH for submission to the NIH Director and to Congress. The research plan has been under development by the Commission since its initial meeting on June 12, 2006. Public Comment period ends March 8, 2008.

You can easily access the Draft report, the comments in support of the committee submitted by CSA and a sample letter for members to submit http://www.csaceliacs.org/DigestiveDiseasesResearchANNOUNCEMENT.php

This NIH committee report and public comments will influence research directions and funding.
CSA supports increased funding for NIH and encourages researchers to submit quality research proposals. A decreasing number of celiac disease research proposals have been submitted to the NIH since the NIH Consensus Development Conference on Celiac Disease in June of 2004.

-Thanks!

Doctors familiar with Celiac Disease

We are trying to compile a list of doctors in Wichita and the surrounding areas that are familiar with the disease. If you know of a doctor that would be a good addition to the list please email us at WichitaCSA@yahoo.com. Please include the following information (if known):

Name
Phone #
Specialty (General Practice, Pediatrics, GI, etc)
Affiliation (Wichita Clinic, Wesley, etc)

Some of the most frequent questions we've been getting have been which doctors in Wichita are familiar with the disease and which ones do the different tests. Any information we can get would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Staci

BTW, our next meeting will be the potluck in March. Once the date is confirmed I'll post it.
